Filing in Los Angeles County
Los Angeles Superior Court (LASC) is the largest trial court in the United States by case volume. Where you file, and which courthouse handles your case, depends on the amount in dispute and where the events occurred:
- Unlimited civil claims (over $35,000, which covers most vehicle purchases): Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
- Limited civil claims (up to $35,000) and some Independent Calendar (IC) civil departments: Spring Street Courthouse, 312 N. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
- LASC also has 36+ branch courthouses across the county (Van Nuys for the San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Norwalk, Compton, Pomona, Torrance, and others) — where your case is assigned can depend on where the dealer or manufacturer’s registered agent is located, not just where you live.
LASC uses an Independent Calendar (IC) system: once assigned, a single judge oversees your case from the initial case management conference through trial, including that department’s own standing orders. This matters more in LA than in smaller counties because the assigned department’s local practices can affect scheduling and motion procedure.
